The gladiator of the deep ocean. Swordfish are broadbill predators that feed in the pitch-black depths then rise toward the surface at night. South Florida's dedicated swordfishing fleet targets them with deep-drop techniques. One of Florida's most prestigious catches and finest eating fish.

Behavior

Feeds at depths of 1,000–2,000+ feet during the day, rising closer to the surface at night. Solitary hunter with enormous eyes adapted for the deep ocean. Uses its flat bill to slash through schools of prey. Daytime deep-dropping is South Florida's signature swordfish technique.

⚠️ Safety

Bill is extremely dangerous — a thrashing swordfish can impale. Only experienced crews should leaderwire and gaff. Knife at the ready to cut the leader if needed.
