A prized Florida Keys reef fish known for its beautiful olive-and-red coloring and excellent table quality. Mutton snapper are larger and less common than yellowtails, making them a premium catch. The annual mutton snapper spawn in the Keys is one of the most anticipated fishing events of the year.
Behavior
Reef-associated but also found on seagrass flats and near mangroves. Aggregates in large spawning groups during full moons from MayโJuly โ this predictable event draws anglers from across the state. More cautious than yellowtail snapper โ requires lighter tackle.

Sharp dorsal spines โ handle with a firm grip behind the head. Large individuals are powerful and can cause hand injuries with gill plates.
